AUTO MECHANICS
Most car and truck brake linings, clutches and engine gaskets contained asbestos through the 1980s. Mechanics who worked with these on the job as well as many people who worked on cars as a hobby were often exposed to asbestos dust. Grinding or sanding new brake linings as well as blowing out old brake dust with an air hose would release asbestos into the air. At larger garages or brake shops, this exposure could be fairly heavy. Years ago, there were no warnings or guidelines issued concerning safety practices when working with asbestos brakes, clutches or gaskets. In April, 2007, the EPA released a brochure entitled Current Best Practices For Preventing Asbestos Exposure Among Brake and Clutch Repair Workers.
We have compiled a vast amount of information regarding the different types and manufacturers of these automotive friction products. We have represented many former mechanics with mesothelioma and other asbestos diseases. Please contact us if you have any questions about brakes, clutches, gaskets and asbestos disease.
